Ideal customer profile (ICP)

An ideal customer profile (ICP) is a specific description of the customer who gets the most value from your product, narrow enough to name real people who fit.

Also called ICP, ideal customer

Small businesses is not an ICP, because it covers bakeries and law firms with nothing in common. A useful ICP names the role, the situation, and the moment they need you. It decides where you look for customers and what your page says first.

When this shows up

Example, not a real founder: you describe your customer as small businesses and run ads to all of them. Few people click. When you look at your few paying users, they are all independent dentists who dislike their booking software.

What to do next

Look at your best current users or your best interview notes. Write one sentence naming their role, their situation, and the moment they needed you.
