Finding customers and growing

Free trial

A free trial lets a new customer use your paid product at no charge for a set time, after which they pay or lose access.

Also called trial, freemium vs free trial, free trial vs freemium

Looking this up for a class, a job, or something you want to build? If it is the last one, nommi reads your idea before you spend months on it.

It differs from freemium, where a limited version stays free with no end date and people pay to unlock more. A trial puts a deadline on the decision; freemium lets people stay for free as long as they like. Some trials ask for a payment card at sign-up and charge it when the trial ends, others ask only when the person chooses to pay.

When this shows up

Example, not a real founder: you offer a free trial, and most people who sign up never finish setting the product up before it ends. They leave without ever seeing the part they would have paid for.

What to do next

Name the one action that shows a new user the product's value, and check how many trial users reach it before the trial ends. Fix that step before you change the trial's length.
