Building your app

Backend

A backend is the part of your app that runs out of sight on a server, saving data and doing work the screen alone cannot do.

Also called back end, server side

The frontend is what people see and click. The backend keeps accounts, orders and messages so they are still there tomorrow. Without one, an app can only remember things inside the open browser tab. Many app builders connect a ready-made backend for you.

When this shows up

Example, not a real founder: testers sign up for your app, refresh the page, and find themselves logged out with their data gone. The app had a polished frontend, but nothing on a server was keeping what they typed.

What to do next

Write one line for each thing your app must remember between visits. Then check that each one is saved in a backend, not only in the page.
